Hi! My name is Diane Neelis. My husband and I, along with our 2 children moved to Waupaca, Wisconsin in 1973. I have had dogs and other pets all of my adult life.
In 1989, I opened a
Boarding Kennel called Stoney Acres Kennel. About 8 years ago,
I also took over the City Dog
Pound, which also contracts with area townships. Since Waupaca County has never had a place to take surrendered dogs and other animals,
my goal has been to help with this situation.

We have adopted pound dogs ourselves in order to save them!
I have taken in some surrendered dogs on my own, but on a very limited basis only because it can be very costly. I am limited in what I can do because of money, which comes solely out of my pocket.

I try to work with the Rescue Groups state wide and nation wide. These groups are very dedicated people to these animals. I have had Rescue Groups in other states come here to Waupaca to pick up a dog and relay the dog back to their state! I have had dogs that were then adopted to families in Canada, Oregon, and Ohio. Most recently I had a badly injured dog surrendered to me who needed major surgery. This was a young pure breed dog. The Rescue Group relayed her to Iowa, had the surgery done, and she now lives in Oregon with her adopted family. While she was here, I did a lot of praying that she would survive until I could locate a Rescue to take her. The Rescue's vet was totally amazed that she made it as long as she had without surgery. What a wonderful end to her story! After a lengthy ordeal, we have finally achieved our goal to become a shelter.

H.E.L.P. Shelter Dog Rescue, Inc., is a non-profit organization.
Unlike other organizations, we will keep
these dogs for long periods of time in order to get them adopted out and a second chance for a happy life! Working with the City Dog Pound for 8 years, our euthanizations rate is less than 5%. Comparing that to the 50-60% euthanization of other organizations, we feel that we have done a great job with our very limited resources. Now with the H.E.L.P. Shelter, we very much need your help. We need your donations, we would also like to have people willing to donate their homes as foster parents while we try to find homes for the dogs. We would supply the dog food and the medical care if needed. We would like the foster homes to supply loving care and
socialization of these dogs.

Our main goals are to find new homes for these animals, to spay/neuter them, and to find veterinary services who will discount prices for surgeries and medical care. Over these past years, I have had help from many members of my family and they continue to help. My husband Dave, my daughter Cara Johnson, my son David Neelis, and my grandchildren Elizabeth and Samantha Neelis. Now I'm proud to say that my daughter-in-law Tina Neelis is joining me on a full time basis. This shelter has been a
long time coming for Waupaca County and we HOPE that people will get behind us and help make this a big success!

We will be putting up a DONATION board in our building for anyone who donates to acknowledge them. A board will also go up to show success of our adopted pets.
Fleet Farm of Waupaca recently donated leashes and collars to us, so any dog that is adopted receives a new collar and leash free. Over the years, we have had many people donate things even to the City Dog Pound.

We encourage those people to also contact us, so that we can include them to our DONATION board. We have had children from the Chain O' Lakes School also collect blankets and dog treats and then donate them to the Dog Pound! We would like the people who have adopted dogs from the Pound to send recent pictures of these pets for our board. After the 7 day hold on stray dogs from the pound, they will be placed in the H.E.L.P. Shelter for adoption. People wanting to surrender their pets will be asked for a donation to help care for this pet. Besides the feeding and care of these pets we make a lot of calls trying to locate Rescues and adoption facilities. We will put pictures and information on our adoptable pets in the local papers as well as our web site. We promise to do everything in our power to find new homes for these pets, as we have done in the past 8 years. We hear complaints all the time about the dog problem in our community, now we can really begin to address the problem. If you are really sincere about
helping these dogs, now is the time to help man's best friend. Our shelter is a non-profit
shelter and your donations are deductible.
